Strategic Goal :
To increase economic independence, employability, and leadership capacity among vulnerable women and youth.
The Face of Women and Poverty in Africa
These are not just numbers. They are real women like Ketura:
Over 490 million people in Sub Saharan Africa live in extreme poverty (World Bank, 2023). 70% of Africa’s poor are women (UN Women). Women perform about 60–80% of food production in Africa, yet they own less than 13% of the land (FAO). Women in Sub Saharan Africa spend 4–6 hours daily collecting water and firewood, losing time that could be spent earning or learning. 2 in 3 illiterate adults in Africa are women, limiting their economic opportunities. Nearly 90% of the female labor force in Sub Saharan Africa works in insecure, informal jobs (ILO). Women in poor households are 3 times more likely to die in childbirth due to lack of access to skilled care.Behind every statistic is a woman, a mother, a daughter, a sister, struggling to survive.
